The Chandler Police Department currently conducts three Citizen Academy’s per year.  Each academy class is a 13-week program that is presented on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  All academy classes are conducted in the community room at the Chandler Police Departments Main Precinct located at 250 E. Chicago Street.

The next Citizen’s Academy is tentatively scheduled for May 6th, thru July 29th, 2009.

The goal of the Citizen Police Academy is to give citizens a better understanding of the guidelines within which an officer functions and a better understanding of why officers handle situations as they do. Instructors are sworn officers or civilian employees of the police department who combine instruction in police procedures and theory with practical, hands-on scenarios.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and work, live, or attend school in the City of Chandler. They can have no prior felony convictions and no misdemeanor arrests within six months of their academy application. All applicants must pass a background check conducted by the police department.

Some of the courses to be taught include: Media and the Law, Firearms Training, Gang Awareness, Patrol Functions, K-9 Program, Criminal Investigations/Narcotics, Traffic Law, Special Assignment Unit, and Use of Force.

Graduation Standards:

  • No more than three (3) absences during the 13-week program.
  • One five (5) hour ride-along with a Chandler Police Officer.
  • Conduct conducive to the informational goals established for this academy.
  • No weapons allowed in classroom at any time

The goals of the citizen academy are designed to provide the student with a basic knowledge of the police function. Individuals are expected to conduct themselves in a manner conducive to the achievement of those goals.

Citizens are encouraged to apply online through the above listed link. If you prefer to have the application mailed directly to you or have additional questions, please contact the Crime Prevention Unit at 480-782-4951.
